In this special National Disability Employment Awareness Month episode of Discussing Disability, host Nate Wise sits down with Shane Kanady, Vice President of Workforce Development at SourceAmerica, to talk about the power of meaningful work.

Each year, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a chance to recognize the talents and contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace. It’s also a time to learn how inclusive employment benefits everyone — employees, employers, and entire communities. At SOAR365, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on hardworking, creative, motivated workers who are making a difference every day.

Every day, more children like CaiaJade are being diagnosed with developmental disabilities in Virginia. That number is expected to grow from 20,202 in 2018 to over 40,000 by 2030, based on historical annual growth rates. The sooner children receive services, the better the outcomes.

By combining environmentalism and disability employment, SOAR365 is helping change materials and mindsets, showing that everyone has the power to make a lasting impact.

With the help of SOAR365’s Supported Employment program, he has found a role that aligns his love for animals and hands-on work, even if it requires him to get his hands dirty from time to time.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has started a new initiative called the Blue Envelope Program. It is made to help drivers with autism spectrum disorder feel safer and less stressed if they are pulled over by police or are in a car accident.

SOAR365’s 2024 Annual Report highlights a year of growth, impact, and forward momentum. The report showcases powerful stories of individuals with disabilities achieving greater independence, along with strategic investments in programs, staff, and infrastructure.

SOAR365 is partnering with the Virginia Department of Health Office of Family Health Services, Injury and Violence Prevention Program (VDH IVPP) and Blue Octopus Consulting on the Inclusive Play and Prevention Initiative Collaborative, a statewide project focused on preventing sexual abuse of youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in social, sports, and recreation settings.
