SOAR365 Internship Builds Skills for Health Administration Career

VCU student Tia Rogers has big plans to make an impact in the community and is working toward that goal through her internship in SOAR365 Employment Services. A political science and sociology major with a minor in public management, Tia has her sights set on a career in public health administration. She is off to a great start with SOAR365!

“I am passionate about social justice and equity.  SOAR365’s dedication to fostering a sense of belonging and providing opportunities resonated strongly with me,” said Tia. “I want to be part of an organization that advocates for the rights and needs of individuals with disabilities, and actively works to improve their quality of life through diverse and engaging programs.”

Tia’s internship responsibilities range from assisting with daily office tasks to attending intake meetings. She creates individualized assessments for each participant, researches potential employers, and logs information related to participants’ interests, transportation needs, and scheduling.

“I’ve gained a much better understanding of what it takes to empower individuals with disabilities,” she said.  “This internship is allowing me to develop my skills and gain a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into making a positive impact on their lives.”

At VCU, Tia serves as a teaching assistant for the Student Success in Political Science course. She also serves as treasurer for the Political Science Alliance Club, she manages the club’s finances, organizes events, and promotes student engagement on campus.

Tia finds great value in applying VCU academic studies to real-world scenarios at SOAR365.  “I am developing skills in a compassionate environment that allows me to contribute and grow personally and professionally,” she says.  “These insights and experiences are so important for building a career in public health administration.”

Kia Clarke, SOAR365’s Supported Employment Manager, has played a significant role in mentoring Tia and making the internship a fulfilling experience. “I’ve truly enjoyed working with Tia. Each week she’s come in with a huge smile. She’s eager to learn more about Supported Employment, but also willing to assist in any way she was needed. During her time interning with our department, we were able to get a great deal of administrative tasks completed. I’m so thankful for Tia, and I hope to have her return to intern with us in the future,” said Kia.

Tia describes the work atmosphere at SOAR365 as “incredibly welcoming” and praises Kia’s ability to explain essential work tasks and processes.  “The hands-on experience and mentorship I’ve received have been instrumental in my professional development, and I am grateful for the opportunity to support SOAR365’s mission,” she said.

Outside academics and her internship, Tia enjoys traveling, experimenting with new recipes, sharing meals with friends and family, and exploring Richmond’s vibrant arts scene.  “Overall, my life is a balance of academic pursuits, personal growth, and community involvement – all of which contribute to my goal of making a meaningful impact in the community.”
