SOAR365 Summer Camp Medical Volunteer
Never underestimate the power of helping hands. That’s according to Daniel Blair, a Registered Nurse in Day and Respite Services, in describing Christian Ellis, RN, and her contributions at Camp Baker this past summer. “It is always a huge help having extra medical hands,” he said. Christian provided 40 hours of nursing assistance as part of her James Madison University (JMU) Bachelor of Science requirements. An ICU nurse at a local hospital, she helped with medical screenings and first aid, and conducted nursing assessments of campers.

The partnership between JMU and Camp Baker is a boon. “It has been wonderful working with JMU students. They arrive ready to learn and help, and they are never afraid to hop into programming and help run activities at summer camp,” Daniel said. Christian was just as enthusiastic. “I had a wonderful experience with Camp Baker. It was great to gain the exposure with individuals with disabilities (as) I previously haven’t had much. It has definitely given me positive memories from this summer!”
