High school junior Kathleen Rawls believes that a STEAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) helps students develop life skills, including problem-solving and creativity. She achieved the rank of Eagle Scout after working with SOAR365 Youth Services to develop a STEAM Learning Cart for program participants in middle school and high school.
Kathleen even developed a training manual and an assortment of materials used during educational activities. “When I was introduced to SOAR365, I researched the organization to learn about its mission and the opportunities provided through their programs, including Youth Services,” she said. “I’ve seen the benefits of hands-on learning and the growing emphasis on STEAM education, especially for youth. It is invaluable.”
Since she began volunteering last September, Kathleen says she has enjoyed SOAR365’s positive work environment. “Everyone has been incredibly kind and welcoming. They have really helped me learn what SOAR365 is about.”
Kathleen recalls that one of her favorite experiences was visiting SOAR365 Youth Services and seeing participants engage in all the fun activities. “I enjoyed seeing the creativity that was being fostered there and all the different opportunities to join in and learn – and I am thankful to have been able to contribute to those opportunities in some way.”
