When the federal government announced its “return to in-person work” order in early 2025, thousands of military and civilian employees returned full time to the Defense Supply Center Richmond. Behind the scenes, keeping those buildings clean, safe, and welcoming, is a dedicated group of workers who make it all possible – SOAR365’s Janitorial & Custodial Services team.

SOAR365 employs more than 40 people with disabilities on the Janitorial & Custodial Services team alone, giving them the opportunity to build their skills and take pride in meaningful work. At Bellwood, their efforts support the men and women who serve America’s military. Though their work often happens in the background, its impact is visible everywhere, from spotless floors and gleaming hallways to tidy workspaces that keep the base running smoothly.

The team’s work at Bellwood is part of the AbilityOne Program, one of the largest sources of employment in the country for people with disabilities. Through its partnership with SourceAmerica, SOAR365 provides meaningful, competitive jobs on federal contracts, giving employees the opportunity to gain independence while making a real difference in their community.

“We have a lot more work to do than we did just a year ago,” says Crew Leader Jesse Patron, who has been with SOAR365 for 17 years. “More people means more trash. It’s more important than ever that I coordinate my team so everything stays organized.” Even still, he welcomes the challenge. “I make it very clear that I’m working with them,” he explains. “I don’t just tell them what to do and walk away, I’m right there beside them doing the work.”

For fellow Crew Leader Brandon Benton, teamwork and communication are key to keeping things running smoothly across the base. “There are more spills, more trash, more people asking for help,” he says. “We have schedules and timeframes, so I know where everyone’s at and can send help when needed.” Brandon says his role has helped him grow as a leader and as a person. “Different people have different disabilities,” he explains. “You learn how to talk to everyone in a way that helps them succeed.”

Both Jesse and Brandon take pride in their crews’ work and the positive role they play in supporting America’s military. “We get a lot of compliments,” Brandon says with a smile. “People tell us we’re doing a good job and that feels great.”

As the pace at Bellwood continues to pick up, the SOAR365 crews are meeting the challenge head-on. Their hard work, teamwork, and dedication ensure the base stays ready for the important work being done there every day.
