Josias Collier is a sophomore biology major at the University of Richmond, where he is working on a pre-medical school track. He volunteers at SOAR365 through U of R’s Bonner Scholars Program, which supports civic engagement by placing students in local organizations that focus on issues that each student feels most passionate about.
“For me, it was health care because my mother is in the health care world,” said Josias. “I hope to help people just like my mother does.”
He was initially drawn to SOAR365 when he learned of the many programs and services that SOAR365 provides to participants. “I want to help the world by improving health care for those who may not be as fortunate and to help them receive the same support and resources as others,” Josias explains.
What does Josias enjoy the most about SOAR365? “For me, this is a whole different environment. I love to volunteer and help people in need. I also value the commitment of SOAR365’s direct support professionals. The connections I have made have been genuine and eye opening!” At SOAR365, Josias has done everything from working with our facilities team, to completing research projects to assisting with volunteer projects (even helping clean vans!).
Josias is working toward becoming a doctor specializing in pediatric emergency medicine. “I want to help young kids,” he says. “They are the next generation that will lead the country, and they deserve support to live a full and healthy life.”
When he is not studying or volunteering at SOAR365, Josias spends his time on a variety of activities. “My interests include listening to music, and I am open to lots of different music,” he says. “I find it therapeutic and a sanctuary. I also enjoy sports such as football and basketball, and love going thrifting in RVA. I’m continuing to explore this great city!”
